Things happen all the time that take us off track. It can be a simple cold or flu, an extra busy week or two, the change of school ending or a new school year beginning. Or like myself, it could be your mother having a stroke.
The last six weeks have been pretty intense for me heading back to Atlanta to care for her, then move her to assisted living, spending hours on the phone daily with my mom and sister, talking to doctors and therapists, paying her bills, cleaning out her fridge... All the things you do to support those you love.
I thought I was doing alright, and yet, yesterday on my way home from Atlanta I got stuck in traffic. It threw me over the edge. That is not normal for me! Atlanta IS traffic and small things like that don't bother me.
But with my extra time in the car I realized that I had not been practicing my practices. I wasn't meditating daily. My body was not happy with the amount of movement, and I just can't spend my weekends in Atlanta all the time. I need my kitchen. I need my practices, I need to be with my son and I need more time to spend with my body.
So, I cancelled my plans and I spent the evening nourishing my body with healthy food. I exercised inside and went for a walk outside. I walked up a huge hill and realized I needed more of that, so I got my bike out and went looking for hills to climb. I pulled into a park, got off my bike and put my feet in the grass for a while. I did yoga before bed.
I already had a chiropractor appointment scheduled for 8am, so I got up early and went for a morning walk/jog, packed my son lunch, went to my chiropractor and through the course of Sunday night and Monday morning, I remembered how wonderful it feels to be in my body. I remembered how much I like life.
I am so grateful that my neural pathways are wired for health and vitality now. I just can't not take care of myself. I am used to feeling young In my body, clear In my mind, and I am used to enjoying life again.
I would like to say I will never get off track again, but I know that couldn't be true. Life is life, and will always surprise us with chaos and responsibility. But what I will say is, I will always come back to me. It will happen faster and faster every time I get knocked off.
I know that in my pursuit of health last year, I wouldn't have done everything I did last night and this morning. I would have ridden my bike, OR gone for a walk or some other thing that made sense to me, definitely not all of it. But because my body had gotten used to the feeling of health and has physically gotten stronger, what I did is what made sense.
What I also know Is that there are some schedule changes that need to occur to make supporting my mom and sister equally as powerful, but that also don't steal from me. And I already have that In the works.
It's a win for everyone!
What does your body need more of to feel alive, to be vibrant, to be able to express joy? What can you let go of or do differently so that it doesn’t steal your health and sanity?
Somehow I didn't manage to record meditation Monday morning, but those are questions that I had asked in meditation.
We spent most of the time breathing through the body, listening to the sound of the bowls, creating space for clarity. Â What can you do to engage your body that allows more of your vibrant spirit to inhabit it?!
You don't have to take hours today or tomorrow to get your mojo back. You could drink an extra glass of water. You could take a walk or go to a class of some kind. You could make plans with a friend, or do something that helps you make a new friend. Make art! Create life, however you do it, please foster life and living.
